Applying to an Online College Degree Program

"So it's that time of the year when those of you...applying
to B-school [business school] must be working furiously
trying to put together your application package...Don't
sweat! Applying to a B-school...is a great roller-coaster
ride. "The sooner one learns to relax,... the sooner one
can begin to enjoy it, and...do better justice to it."
This quote may be found at:
www.Businessweek.com,  posted
on Jan. 7, 2007 by Vivek Bhatnagar in the MBA Journals,
"From India to Octopus' Garden."

The above quote applies to all applications to online
college degree programs, not just to business school
applications.  Below are some of the requirements for
applying to online colleges.

Prerequisites

If you are interested in online education, there may be
some prerequisites required for the online degree program
you choose.  The best way to find out if prerequisites are
required and which ones are needed is to check the online
admissions pages of the college.  Prerequisites will vary.

If you are interested in an associate's degree, you will
need:
* a high school diploma or its equivalent or
* have a job, be at least 18 years old, and have Internet
access.
* For some majors, such as English and mathematics,  you
may need to pass basic
competency English and   mathematics tests or take
prerequisite courses.

If you want to apply to a bachelor's program, you will need:
* a high school diploma or its equivalent
* or an associate's degree.
* For some majors, such as English and mathematics,   you
may need to pass basic
competency English and   mathematics tests or take
prerequisite courses.

To join a master's program, you need:
* a bachelor's degree from a college that is, at minimum,
regionally accredited
* a 2.5 to 3.0   grade point average (GPA)
* either   the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), the Graduate
Management Admissions Test (GMAT), or
the   Miller   Analogies Test (MAT).

For certification programs, you may need:
* a job in the field of the certification.

(These facts may be found at:  "Prerequisites for Enrolling
in an Online College" by Vicky Phillips, Published on

The College Application

To apply to an online college, you will need to provide
your high school diploma or equivalent, all college
transcripts, results of any tests that are required, and,
possibly, your birth certificate.  You may have to take
some of the tests mentioned above.  The GRE tests verbal
and quantitative skills: vocabulary, reading comprehension,
and math, including statistics and algebra. The Miller
Analogies Test (MAT) is math free.  It tests your ability
to think comparatively, such as "Cat is to dog as kitten is
to puppy."  The MAT is often required by graduate schools
in education, human resources, library science and the
social sciences.  The GMAT is often required by graduate
schools in business or management. The GMAT does not test
your knowledge of management or business. It tests verbal
skills, mathematical knowledge (through calculus), and
writing aptitude.

If the college you are interested in is accredited, it will
accept course credit earned at other colleges.  You will
fill out paperwork and provide transcripts of the classes
you have taken.  Some online colleges give course credit
for work experience; you may have to take a test to show
how much you learned.   Usually the application for an
online college can be completed over the Internet.  When
you apply, you may meet with an advisor to help you in
deciding which program to enroll in, how to apply for
financial assistance, and answer your questions.   Online
colleges require access to the Internet.  For that reason,
the college may require you to have certain hardware and
software programs.  You may have to upgrade your computer
to meet the requirements, for example, by purchasing more
memory.  Most online colleges require computers that are
PCs rather than Apple Macintosh computers.

If you are applying to an online degree program, gather the
needed documents, take any tests required, and fill out an
application.  Confer with an advisor.  Check to make sure
you have the required computer capabilities.  Once your
application is approved, you're on your way!

Benefits of Obtaining a Masters Degree Online

What is the difference between a bachelor's degree and a master's degree? There are benefits to both types of degrees, but there is one difference worth mentioning.
A bachelor's degree will get you a steady job. A master's degree will get you out of middle management. A master's degree is more impressive and shows an employer you are not only educated but are recognized as an authority on the subject. By the time you graduate and receive your master's degree, you are an authority.
Earning a master's degree used to be more complicated, involving on-campus attendance and requiring years and years of your life devoted to intense schooling.
However, times have changed and although earning a master's degree online is still difficult (contrary to what diploma mills tell you, you cannot buy a legitimate online master's degree) the Internet has made it much more convenient. Now anyone willing to invest the time and effort can earn their master's degree online, in the comfort of their own home, and reap the benefits.
You can get your master's degree from an accredited school and be on your way to a more fulfilling career. With an online master's degree in hand, you will discover more job prospects. You will see the benefits that come from being a valued, nearly indispensable employee. As a recognized authority on the subject you can start calling the shots. Obtaining an online master's degree not only opens doors for you, it leaves the door wide open so you can enter a higher quality of living.

Ten Advantages to Online Programs

There are many advantages to online education. You can
take general courses or pursue a degree at any level from
associate to doctoral. Here are ten of the most
significant advantages to online education.

1. You don't have to leave home or relocate. You can
attend college while your family is asleep or otherwise
occupied. You can use even 15 minutes of spare time
productively. You don't need babysitters. You don't have
to fight traffic or bad weather.

2. You can work at your own pace - fast or slow. You
aren't held to a strict regimen of classes or a timeline.
If you wish, some programs can be completed in as little as
24 months. If you want to go slowly, no one will rush you.

3. You'll get a high-quality education. Online colleges
are recognized the world over and are accredited by
professionals, so you receive a top-notch education from
high-quality universities. Several U.S. regionally
accredited colleges are: the University of Phoenix, AIU,
Walden University, DeVry University, and Capella University.

4. You'll have a wide variety of choices at 114 online
colleges. Courses and specialization classes number in the
thousands. There are hundreds of majors offered.

5. You can stay employed while getting an online
education and some employers will even pay for your courses
or your entire degree program.

6. Professors are very accessible for easy, efficient
communication, via email or instant messaging, as well as
online conferencing.

7. You'll benefit from the use of technology. An online
education is made easier through the use of e-mail, online
textbooks, and online course materials, including videos.
Writing papers and taking tests are much easier using a
word processor.

8. There are many levels of participation. You can earn
online education degrees at the associate's, bachelor's,
master's, and Ph.D. levels. You can also take GED (high
school equivalency) courses and general education courses.
Training programs are also available.

9. The cost of online education is affordable. You also
have no travel costs, parking fees, etc. At many online
colleges, financial aid is available.

10. You'll never be late or absent from a class again.
These are ten of the most significant advantages to online
education. Perhaps you will agree that online education is
the only way to go!
