Top Ten Daft Degrees offered by Looniversities

According to Graham Brough bizzare courses are being offered to Britain's university students - including surfing, stained glass window studies and comedy. Brewing and gambling also make it into the top 10 barmy subjects chosen in a vote by 3,000 undergraduates.

If you want to see all the subjects that made it into the top ten, you will have to follow the link to the article in the Mirror newspaper. But I should warn you that unless you find puns amusing, you will be groaning by the end. Here is just one toe-curling example - "Baking Technology -For every student who has ever wondered how they get the jam into doughnuts. Many say that this course is the greatest thing since sliced bread". more..

New Degree for Space Junkies

A British university has launched a three-year degree course to further the quest for life forms in the stars. The University of Glamorgan this week announced what it called Britain's first undergraduate course in astrobiology, the search for extraterrestrial life.

It quoted the recent flurry of interest over the possibility of finding life on Saturn's moon Titan as an example of how the search for life beyond Earth is a "major driving force" behind current space programmes.

About half-a-dozen people enrolled this week in the degree course, which will cover topics such as exploring the sky, vertebrate zoology, science and the media, and life in the universe, the university said. Course leader Professor Mark Brake said there is huge interest in the topic.

Nearly 100 people in the local community are studying aspects of the subject. Though the course will examine popular culture, including films such as ET, students will also study obscure texts, work in laboratories and conduct stargazing. "People's interest in quite serious and scientific sober issues is often sparked by popular culture," Brake said.

Drexel University Launches Podcast Series to Help Students Succeed in Earning an Online Degree

Drexel University, Philadelphia’s leading technological university, introduces Drexel’s eLearning Minute, a series of brief podcasts designed to address the unique issues and circumstances that new online students encounter and to offer advice on successfully earning a degree online.“Drexel’s eLearning Minute series was created to educate new online students on how to prepare personally and technically for online courses,” says Dr. Kenneth Hartman, Academic Director of Drexel eLearning and the host of the eLearning Minute. “Online courses require the same amount of time and effort as traditional on campus courses so it’s important to a student’s success to know how to manage time for studying and set the expectation to family and friends that they are in school, just not in the literal sense,” added Dr. Hartman. The first two podcasts of the four-part eLearning Minute series are now available online at www.drexel.com/podcast.
